Chapter 31:
So in this chapter I didn't like how Marija wouldn't give up prostitution. Yea I know it could probably be hard becuase of the morphine she is addicted to but still its a little crazy when she says shes going to be a prostitute for the rest of her life, but I think thats its good that Jurgis at least tried to get her to stop. I aslo really likes how Jurgis went and talked to that one dude for the magazine. Its really good though how he is finally going and talking to him to say that he thinks and how he feels; I liked how they talked about the hours that workers were working and that it should be ok for a man to work for two hours and then be able to devote the rest of his time for the things that he likes to do and what intrests him. The other thing that I liked is that the socialist party got a lot of awards. Also, that the speaker encouraged all those who were in favor of a socialist community to continue of fighting because the battle they are fight has not been won. This shows that he people who really care about what they believe in will do what they need to do to prove that they are dedicated to the issue and want what they believe in and for what they think is right.....

Ch. 29-30
Ch. 29.....
Well Well Well.... i have go t no idea what this chapter was about honestly.. I was like really confused while reading it... i think though im just going out on a lim here bu ti think that what happened in this chapter was good..don' get mad if your reading this and everything I say is entirely wrong.. :/ It gets explained that just because America is a free country that wage slavery is different... but im just going to stop here 'cause I am really confused. :(
Ch. 30...
ok well this chapter wasn't so much better for me. but it is good that Jurgis and Teta whats her face are talking again and that thy are going to Socialist meetings together. Also i really liked how Jurgis wants to help support the family now and take care of them.. that made me happy because the way that things were looking i didn't think it would get any better but what do ou know they do (wow)

Chapter 27 &&&& 28
ok so here is the deal.... these chapters were like way sad and I think I almost cried... but I didn't so its all good(:
Chapter 27:
Jurgis is out trying to look for a job, but at the same time a lot of men are also looking for a job so things can get really difficult. I did get really happy though when he did find a job, it just shows to never give up and always have hope. WELL then Jurgis goes to look for Marija and this was really sad because he found her at a whorehouse.. this to me was really sad because it just stinks to think people had to stoop to some low levels just to get money so that they are able to support their family. Also, another person dies.. I mean seriously did any body ever live??
Chapter 28:
ok soo I got really excited and happy and stuff when the girls no longer were prostitues... they were now able to go back into respecting their body and not just giving it away. It made me mad that the prostitutes got addicted tod rugs so that they were always coming back for more.. I mean honestly you dont want your employeer to get you hooked onto drugs! like for real thats just so messed up!!! I would hate if my boss got me addicted to a drug just cause they didn't want me to leave...

chapter 26 (:
ok in this chapter Jurgis keeps his job, yes he keeps it!! Jurgis make a total of three dollars an hour, but making three dollars per hour isn't that bad. I didn't like how he got put back into jail; while he was in jail he figured out that phil Connor was one of Scully's favorites. Finally, the meat packing brought women to sell booze to the black workers to keep them working. To me it just seems like Jurgis finally turned his life around, but by knowing al the books that we read in this class im not going to get my hopes up. I really liked how he got to keep his job though and ended up being a boss... it was time for him to get to take charge over something!!!

23. 24. 25 (:
Chapter 23:
I think its cool how Jurgis gets a job(: It also kinda stinks that he suffers from and injury though and is then put into the hospital.. ): It seems like to me that the author really does not like Jurgis and just wants to make the poor guy suffer as badly as he possibly can ):
Chapter 24:
It was way sad how they had to fight over the places to live in and stuff.. I really liked how the one mad helped Jurgis b giving him a meal and a place to say and paid for the cab and gave him some money. I don't like how the butler dude told Jurgis that he had to leave and he could not stay there. Also, I am starting to think that Jurgs likes to fight people.
Chapter 25:
It is really sad when you cant do something when you have money with out people being or getting suspicious..It is also crazy how he got put back into jail because the bartender cheated him. Jurgis was just trying to prove that he wans't going to take that from anybody and he was not ok with people like that, (: I think Jurgis did the right thing and i probably would have started hurting the guy too (:

Chapter 20-23
Chapter 20:
In this chapter i liked how Jurgis was willing to look for workeven though Connore had him blacklisted. It was good that he took the job that was not necissarily the best of the best but it was a way for him to make money.... so that made me happy (: i also liked how Juris started learning English again at nights!!! i think it is great that he wants to learn english and keeps working at it...
Chapter 21:
its really sad how the family's income come from 10 year olds... i dont think thats right at all for kids to be working.. i liked hoe the one lady wanted to help find Jurgis a job after seeing and hearing about their life and such....its good that he got a job at the mill but it kind of stinks that he can only go home on the weekends ): oh oh oh its also way sad when Antana dies exspecially because of they way that she died....
Chapter 22:
i dont like how Jurgis fight all of his emotions.. it cant possibly be good for himt o keep it all locked inside he has to let it all out eventually.... i like how the farmer offered him work and gave him shelter frot he times being... it showed that not all people are mean in this book.... it really stinks that jurgis works so hard to get only a few meals and that when he does make money he blows it in that night by buying alcohol and spending it on girls.......

Chapters 7- 20 The Jungle
Chapter 7:
in this chapter i really didn't like how they were still going to work even though they were sick instead of staying home a recovering from their illness. Also i didn't like how people were suffering from starvation and being homeless.i think if someone is suffering from starvation people in the community should do all that they can and are willing to do to help others out.
Chapter 8:
in chapter 8 i didn't really understand what the celebrations were... and why just most any one could go if the wanted to. it really upset me when i read that people were loosing their jobs and not making money. This is because its not easy to find a job and if you can;t make money then you are not going to be able to provide for your family.
Chapter 9:
I really like how Jurgis started learning English! Ao, how he was becoming a U.S citizen. I was kinda happy but not at the same time when Jurgis learned about everthing in the meat packing places.... i think it should if used be evenly distributed but id rather have it with noooo ickkyyyy meat!!
Chapter 10:
in this chapter i like how they made their house seller person guy go over what all the coasts were for!! I think its sad how Marija looses her job but its also good that she finda new one... I love love love love love how Ona has the baby and Jurgis had a great affection for him, but it is a little ridiculous how Ona goes back to work after a week of delivering the babyy.... it puts her health in danger!! ):
Chapter 11:
I think it is great how Marija opens a savings account. BUT its not good that she goes and withdraws all the money and sews it into her clothes. then she had a fear of sinking into the mud on the streets..... i just think why even bother sewing it in your clothes????
Chapter 12:
i think that it is a big bummer that Jurgis gets hurt and cant work for 3 months. Its stupid to me how it get frustrated and then takes it out on his family.... thats just not right! Oh and i really dont like how Jurgis beats the one guy with a really long name and makes him go to work on snowy days when he doesn't want to after he got all frostbitten and ruined his joints in his hands. Oh Oh Oh and i think its crazy how and 11 year-old had to work to help his family.... thats just such a young age..... ):
Chapter 13:
i didn't no really how to feel about the one ladys daughter dyeing cause some were happy and some weren't......... i think id be sad thought!! I feel like Jurgis should have wanted to help with the funeral... but oh well its his life bud! Also its good that Jurgis gets a job but i mean it does kinda stink that it like th least desirable one of all.....
Chapter 14:
I really really really like how Jurgis and his family learn about all the secrets in the meat packing industries... like how the worst meat goes into the sasgue. it kinda really sad when Jurgis and Ona start to not get along and Jurgis becomes and alcoholic... ): 0: Its super upper sad how Antanas get a bad childhood sickness and only makes it to his first birthday ): It great though how Ona get pregnant again but not so great that she gets sick cause that can be bad for the baby and her health.... :/
CHapter 15:
this is one crazyyy chapter to me!i can not believe that Ona gets harassed, and rapped, and threatened and still lies to Jurgis about to why she is not coming home at night... I dont think that Jurgis should have had to go to prison because he was just protecting his wife and hurting the person that hurt her. If anyone should have gone to jail it should have been the Connor guy.
Chapter 16 and 17:
I dont think it was right at all for Jurgis to get arrested and taken to jail he really was doing it in defense of his wife.... it is even a little blow outta proportion when they sentence him to 30 days in prison. He even pleads to the judge that his family can not be provided for if he does not work but the judge does not care. He gets a visit and finds out that everyone lost their jobs and they cant pay rent or get food and Marija is suffering from blood poisoning and the family income comes from begging. that to me is just really sad and should not happen to anyone if that were to be possible. its also really sad how he has to be in jail durring christmas and how he thinks about what his family has gone through....
Chapter 18:
After spending 3 extra days in prison since he could not pay his $300 bond its sad that he had to walk 20 miles how to find out that his family does not live there some other family does and his is in a boarding house. but it is also cool that he arrives just as Ona is going into labor.
Chapter 19:
i like how the midwife agrees to go help even though Jurgis could not afford what she was asking. its kinda a bummer that he gets told to leave cause he is in the way so he goes to a saloon until 4 A.M.. but at his arrival it made me cry cause the baby had died and Ona was dying. But its stupid how he went to get drunk afterwards!! :l

Pride and Prejudice
SO far in Pride and Prejudice what I have read is that the people in the book are very big on proper etiquette, beauty, and they judge by the way that they see things. They go to a dance and based by your appearance is how you get asked to dance. There was one one lady that was really happy about girl getting asked to dance by the same person twice in one night. Then in the book they really talk about a specific group of people that are really high class. They get focused no because of how nicely the dress, how proper they act, and just by how they are as a person. One of the guys Bingley was haughty, reserved, and fastidious, and his manners were well bred, but were not inviting. the girls at the party were the prettiest seen. Darcy was the girl that had little beauty, no fashion, got no attention, and no pleasure. Guys first idea was not by appearance but by the second date that’s when they would start judging by appearance and if you weren’t pretty enough you wouldn’t get the attention you wanted. Ummm those who were not fulfilling the expectations of the gentleman lived a life without marriage. A lady’s imagination is very rapid, it comes from admiration to love, from love to matrimony in a moment. They couldn’t fall in love if they were not encouraged to do so, and if they weren’t encouraged they had to put the effort in if that’s what they wanted.

Chapters 4,5,6 The Jungle
Chapter 4:
I think that when Jurges is talking about hot the children should get an education he is absolutely correct. As we have learned earlier that knowledge is power so therefore they should get an education. When i read this i felt happy because i believe that ever body should have the opportunity to get educated and be knowledgable. Also, because with the education the can get higher income job so that the can make more money.
Chapter 5:
I think after reading this chapter that it is really gross how the pack unsafe me. To me that is just gross and unhealthy. Also, it was stupid how people were complaining about their jobs. I like how they were realizing how jobs in America really were though and not what the were expecting or use to.
Chapter 6:
When reading chapter six it really upset me how the realtor lie to them about paying interest when they were buying the house. Also, the employers were taking advantage of the employees but cheating them out and lying about their wages. I think that the employees need to start getting treated better then they do...

Argumentative Essay: Fredrick Douglass
My topic for this argumentative essay was to create a reasoned argument that demonstrates why slavery is a dehumanizing experience for both the slave and the slave master. My central argument is that i agree that it is dehumanizing to the slaves and the slaveholders. Also, that it is wrong that people thought that it was just a way of life when it really isn't, it is what we would call abuse not a way of life. I can prove that slavery is dehumanizing to slaves becuase they got traded, treated like property, didn't have good living conditions, didn't ever get enough to eat, and they were not provided with the clothes neccessary. I can prove that it is dehumanizing to the slave holder becuase they didn't care if the slaves were in pain, didn't care if they were hungry, didn't care if they did not have enough to eat, and they didn't care if they got seperated from their family. It was like the slaveholders didn't really have a heart they didn't feel any sympathy towards slaves.

Last but not Least chapter 11 (: (:
Response:::
Chapter 11 to me seemed like it was a quick summary of his life after he escaped. I liked how he put stuff in about the underground railroad. I thought it was kinda weird how he didn't really like to get a reward and that his master thought if he gave Douglass a reward that it would make him work harder. There was a really long paragraph that I didn't really understand so...It was really sweet when he said that it would be hard for him to escape since it would mean leaving his friends behind and he loved and cared about them. (: It was also really cool how he said there wasn't a word that could describe how it felt to be a free man. It made me realize that we take that for granit some times because we didn't have to fight or work for our freedom the way that they did and we didn't have to suffer like them. I also liked how Mr. Ruggles got Fredrick a certificate "officializing" his marriage. I did think it was weird however how he had so many different names.
Comments:::
- I really liked that he became a free man! (:
- i liked that Mr. Ruggles was so nice to him (: that made me happy!!
Questions:::
- Why did he have so many names??
-Why was it hard from his to describe how he felt as a free man???

Comment and Question chapter 10
Question.
Why were they so worried about their safety onb the holidays?
Why did Douglass enjoy teaching?
Comment.
I like how he was going to run away.
I liked that they got the holidays as a "free"person.

Rest of Chapter 10(:
Chapter ten to me was a little confusing to me. I don't really understand how everything ties back together. It to me seemed like it was a little all over the place. I ddi enjoy how he did decide to run away though. It showed that he was now willing to take a stand and show that he no longer wanted to put up with being a slave anymore, that he wanted to be free.

Questions and Comments 8-40(:
Chapter 8:
Question- Why did Fredrick Douglass want to runaway?
Comment- I liked how he got attached to the Baltimore boys!
Chapter 9:
Question- What is a "nigger-beater"?
Comment- I thought that this chapter was pointless, it mainly talked about his master.
Chapter 10:
Question- Why did they get Sunday off of work?
Comment- I thought it was weird when i read that you can't get a new master until the "contract" is up.

chapters 8 9 and part of 10
Chapter 8:
One thing that i really did not enjoy about chapter 8 was how it said what they were compared too.
I don't think it is right that they were valued at the same price as animals. Slaves were not animals they were people whether the slave owners wanted to believe so or not. I thought it was cool how Fredrick Douglass was excited to return back to Baltimore even thought it seemed like he didn't even know his master anymore, like they were two completely different people. I kinda got lost when it started talking about how the grandmother started giving things to people. Well, at least that's what i think that she was doing I'm still not quite sure. It was kinda sad when it was talking about how the grandmother was to die a lone. I really like how he got attached to the Baltimore boys(: it made me happy when it showed that he had real feelings. O lastly, i thought it was good that he wanted to run away. If i were him i would want to run away too.
Chapter 9:
I thought it was really sad when he was being treated in a way that he was not use to, he didn't expect to be treated that way. It was weird to me how his new master was mean, but was not capable of taking the power or authority over things. One thing that i did like was that his master was a religious man. its kind of interesting how he will find religious reasons for every one of his actions. it was really sad that he has to deal with a person that he considered to be the worst master that he had ever had. Nobody should have to feel like they are stuck with somebody that is so horrible and cruel to them that they are unhappy and miserable most of the time.
Chapter 10:
Well... chapter 10 was a hard chapter for me to understand. I almost cried when it said that he got beat for a week after he arrived and then had many beatings like it after the first for similar offenses. Also, reading that he was whipped frequently and got enough to eat, but not near enough time to eat it all was just stupid. it was cool how his master was a hard-working man... it shows that he still has some good character. It kinda rough i think on the slaves how they had to work no matter what the conditions outside were like. It was good that he got to spend Sunday as a free man and do as he pleased. I thought that the master was being a total jerk when he was kicking him and making him get up and get back to work even though he was really sick and could barley stand. The last two pages where it was just one reallyyyyy long paragraphs i got completely lost.

Chapters 5, 6 and 7
Chapter 5
I really like how in chapter 5 it talkes about how he was close to his master. I think it is good that since he "worked" for him that they were close to each other. I don't think that it is ok that he was not treated well b his old master. I think that the way that his old master treated him was uncalled for and not cool. What really bothered me was that they did not get fed properly. Either you were the strongest so u held the best place or you ate the fastes so you got the most, the food was not evenly shared. I really liked that he was happy to be going to Baltimore. I also really like how he sas that he is thankful to god and that he likes his new mistress.
Chapter 6
Durring chapter 6 I didn't know whether is were strange or normal for his new mistress to start off nice, but then turn into one that irresponsibly uses their power. I didn't really like how the city slaves were treated better then the other slaves. I feel like all the slaves should be treated equally and fairly. It shouldn't really matter where or who you work for they should all get the same things. No one slave should get more then the other, the should all get they same amount of things.
Chapter 7
It made me really happy when I read that he was being help to learn to read and write and even though she was told not to help she still did for a while until she understood why she could not help him. I like how he did what ever he could to lear how to read. As he tried to learn to read he was also putting the white kinds in danger of getting into trouble by having them help him read. It made me wonder though were the men really wanting to have him escape and then catch him and turn him in or if they were just saying what they thought.

Salvery
My reaction to all of this is that it is wrong. What they did to the slaves was cruel and way uncalled for. I didn't really get that when the slaves got whipped that they were whipped on their feet. I thought that maybe it was in their back, but not their feet. Yes, I would probably jump of the ship. Why? I would jump off the ship because I would then have a little hope of being able to survive and not have to go through all the beatings that they were going through on the ships. I think that you have a liess likey chance to live if you were to stay on the ship. This way if you jump off the ship you know that if you die it wasn't because you were beaten to death. If I were on board with a baby I would try my hardest to protect the baby as much as I was able to. I would rather put my life in danger and have the baby safe then protect myself and put the baby in danger.

Chapters 2, 3, and 4
Chapters 2,3,and 4 were kind of harsh in a way. I really started to feel sorry for the slaves. It seemed like everything they could of either ended badly or they still got whipped because their master wanted to do it for their own pleasure. Slaves were really taken advantage of and nobody appreciated their hard work. This really got me thinking because today if somebody were to be treated like this they would not put up with it nor would the people seeing it. I think that some of the punishments well most of the punishments were a little to sever and cruel for the things they were getting punished for. It does not see right to me that people got treated this way back then and it wasn't a big deal. It was common for African Americans to be treated like property back then before everyone had freedom and everyone was treated equally.
Page 1-12
I think that the purpose of the first two paragraphs was to give the reader a little bit of background information. With out the two letters in the introduction I don't think that the readers would have as good of an understand of what it is they are reading and will be reading about. What I think about chapter one is that slaves had a hard life. Slaves didn't know their exact age all that they were aware of was what was close to what they thought was their age. To me I think that it is weird to not know when your birth date is and to know how old you are, but I guess that was just the culture then. What I also think is weird is that a mother and child got weened when the child was at such a young age and grew up not knowing who their mother and father were. On page 11 the second paragraph it talks bout how slaves could not leave unless they were granted permission to do so by there masters. it only happened occasionally that a master would allow his slave to leave. The master then would be known as a kinda master which may or may not have been a good thing to be called. In Fredrick Douglass's case it was a said that his father was also his master which he never really new was true or not. I don't think that I could even imagine not knowing who my birth father was. Slaves suffered a lot more then most people did at the time , they had greater hardships which to me is unfair and abusive to one another. They try to put of that slavery is right and yes some might believe so but I do not. What I don't like is how on page 12 the third paragraph he talks about how the overseer took pleasure in whipping slaves and that the louder they yelled the harder he whipped.
